Drama has remained a very popular subject here at Samuel Ward Academy and is responsible for the artist ethos of the school. Over the last few years we have a had a strong collaboration with the Music department and have merged the two subjects into the Performing Arts area.
The Drama department at Samuel Ward Academy provides a safe and inclusive environment where students are inspired to work both together and independently to create and to see a wide variety of drama and theatre work. We share precisely the same expectations and outcomes in Drama that we expect students to achieve in ‘life’, not just education. Drama students will develop both drama specific skills and transferable skills such as ambition, achievement, self belief, empathy, diplomacy, teamwork and confidence which will prepare them for life after school, whether or not they should choose to pursue their career in drama.
After KS3, students have the opportunity to study Drama at GCSE. The course is 3 years long and focuses on 3 components. Devising, script working, and a text exploration. Further to this, we run a 2 year Advanced level course in KS5 which offers students a foundation to develop their skills in order to take it further into their education. Amongst the qualifications, the Drama dept offers a rich extra-curricular study programme such as Drama club, Just for Men performance group, KS3 production, KS4 production, whole school Musical and the Shakespeare festival and Cambridge Drama festival.
