Dear Parents and Carers,

We are looking forward to welcoming the students to school tomorrow for the start of the new school year, especially our new Year 7 students. I’ll write again soon with a more usual newsletter, but for today it is important to cover some points before tomorrow.

The Start of the Day

School starts for all students at 8.40 as usual and all students will spend tutor time and period one with their tutors, enabling them to go through some important notices, distribute timetables and generally do all the normal admin that the start of a school year entails.

All students, including Year 7, should go straight to their tutor rooms. Year 7 spent some time in their tutor rooms during the transition days, so they should know where they are. There will be staff on duty with tutor room lists to help anyone who is unsure. Students can also always ask at the student window in B Block if they need help finding their way. A list of tutors and tutor rooms for all years was sent out earlier and is also included at the end of this letter.

Year 7 Parent Pay, Lunch, PE kit & photographs

Frustratingly, we were not able to scan student finger prints during the transition days due to an IT issue. We will do that tomorrow, so all students should be able to use the fingerprint system to pay for food in the canteen, the snack shack or B Block breakout area from Wednesday. For tomorrow, they can either pay in cash in the canteen only, or bring a packed lunch. Apologies for the inconvenience of that.

Parents will receive an email today with their personal login details for parent pay.

We change for PE, so on PE days students come to school in normal uniform and bring PE kit with them. Year 7 have their first PE lesson on Wednesday, so they won’t need to bring PE kit tomorrow.

We have photographers visiting us on Thursday to take the photographs of year 7 students both for our system and parents.

Amendments to the behaviour policy

We have decided to make some minor amendments to our behaviour policy in response to some suggestions from students. Reward points will work the same way they always have, with all student who arrive at lessons on time and ready to learn receiving an R1 as standard and R2 and R3 points for especially good pieces of work or contributions to the school. Consequences points will also work in largely the same way, with C1 and C2 being warnings. A student who receives a C3 will be asked to leave the class to complete their work for the rest of that lesson in the Learning Apart room and will sit a 30-minute detention that night (or the next night if the C3 is given after period 4). We feel that once a student has been given three clear instructions to change their behaviour in a lesson, the rest of the class need to be given the opportunity to get on without further distraction. The Learning Apart room is in C Block and is staffed by a new member of the IO team, Mrs Connaughton.

Best Wishes,
